A Rs.65-lakh project to install state-of-the-art security cameras at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple here will be taken up soon, according to Karumuttu T. Kannan, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the temple."The cameras will be tamper proof and cannot be sabotaged. An alarm will sound if there is any attempt to block their view or disturb it," he said.

The digital cameras would be installed at 32 locations inside the temple.

A control room would be set up inside the temple premises.

An officer would be appointed exclusively to monitor the feeds.

Mr. Kannan was talking to journalists during a community feast organised at the temple on Saturday to mark the Independence Day. National Service Scheme volunteers from the Madura College and workers of the Social Service League organised the programme.

According to officials, community feasts were organised at 14 temples in Madurai district.

Among those who took part included District Tourist Officer K. Dharmaraj, Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran and Madurai Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan.
