High Court orders notice to varsity

The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the University of Madras on a public interest litigation petition filed by a lecturer seeking the removal of a short story and a novel prescribed for under- graduate courses.

The First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice R.K.Agrawal and Justice M.Sathyanarayanan, also asked the authority to file its response on the PIL filed by J.Jai Samyak.

Adjourned to Sept. 19

The matter was adjourned to September 19.

Mr. Jai Samyak submitted that Pudhumai Pitthan’s short story titled ‘Thunbakkeni’ and Vannanilavan’s novel ‘Kadalpurathil’ have been included as prescribed texts in the recently introduced new syllabus for the academic year.

Prejudicial to Dalit community

He contended that the contents of the literary works were prejudicial to the Dalit community.
