Abdul Kareem, 36, of Thittacherry in Nagapattinam district, was arrested by a special police team from Chennai on Friday on the charge of making calls earlier this week threatening that human bombs would go off at the Chennai and other airports in the State.

He had threatened that human bombs would blast the airports in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai and Coimbatore. Security was stepped up at the airports and a special team of the Chennai City Police formed.

The team had been camping at Nagapattinam for the past few days after the call was traced to the district. It mounted surveillance in different places and monitored the movement of suspects.

On Friday, Kareem was arrested as he tried to make a call from the public phone at a grocery shop opposite the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Depot near Velipalayam. He was taken to Chennai after District Superintendent of Police R. Ponni was informed of the arrest, sources said.

Kareem, unemployed, had reportedly made two calls to the office of the Chennai Airport Director, the latest on Wednesday. He had been arrested for making an anonymous call to the Puducherry police a year ago.
