Heavy rains lashed over coastal Tamil Nadu affecting normal life with weathermen predicting more thundershowers during the next 24 hours starting 8 am IST on Saturday.

“Due to upper air circulation, coastal areas of the State have received heavy rains. Moderate to very heavy rain would occur at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 24 hours”, Met officials here said.

Nagapattinam and its surrounding areas received the highest rainfall of 6 cm among other districts of the State.

Most of the schools in the coastal areas had declared a holiday on Saturday as rains continued to hit normal life, official sources said.

Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea as strong offshore winds from north-westerly direction with speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph were likely along south Tamil Nadu coast.

Rain or thundershowers would occur in some areas in Chennai, Met officials said.

Meanwhile, a Rameswaram report said heavy rains lashed the island disrupting normal life in and around the Ramanathaswamy temple. Some parts of the temple were under sheets of water, official sources said.

The sea was rough, they said.

A Coast Guard helicopter had been pressed into service to monitor the situation, the sources said.
