Heavy rains with hail storm hit Vellore on Wednesday for the second day.

Scorching summer sun gave way to clouds in the afternoon. Heavy winds were accompanied by sharp showers. Later hail stones reportedly hit parts of Vellore, Katpadi and Ranipet. Vinyl hoardings, traffic signal posts and electric posts were uprooted in several places of the district. There were sporadic incidents of power cuts due to snapping of power cables.

A tree fell on the railway line near Vellore town railway station and damaged the power cables and disrupted rail traffic for several hours. The showers that started by 3.30 p.m. continued till 8.30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Amavasaiyammal (81) of Muthur village near Arakkonam was allegedly killed in the rain. Several low lying areas were inundated.
