Heart, lung transplanted on two persons

A heart and a lung were transplanted on two individuals at a city hospital with organs donated from a 20-year-old brain-dead person from Andhra Pradesh. The recipient of the lung was a Japanese citizen, while the heart went to an Indian.

Thimothi had come to Chennai to visit relatives. On his way back, while boarding the train home on October 11, he fell and suffered injuries. Railway police admitted him to the Government General Hospital here. He was declared brain dead on Wednesday. After consent from his relatives, his organs were harvested. The kidneys were shared between Government General Hospital and Stanley Government Hospital, the liver went to Stanley Hospital and the corneas were sent to the Government Eye Bank in Egmore. The heart and lung transplants took place at Dr. Cherian's Frontier Lifeline Hospital.
