Health awareness programme at CMC

November 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - VELLORE:

A walk across the campus of Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital on December 2 and 3 can be rewarding in knowledge of various diseases, ways to prevent them and how to lead a healthy life.

Several departments of the hospital are coming together to put up stalls as part of the Hospital Day to create awareness and educate people on preventive and promotive healthcare.

CMC’s director Sunil Thomas Chandy told reporters on Tuesday that the stress would be on educating public on various health issues. “We want to encourage people to ask questions. We will provide information on various diseases and how to recognise the early symptoms, for instance, on heart diseases and cancer,” he said.

The hospital’s medical superintendent C.E. Eapen said the Hospital Day was last held in 2007. “The idea is to inform public about the treatment facilities available here and how they can access them. Various schools have been invited to create awareness among them. Children can take the message forward to their families,” he said.

Different departments have been involved and there would be about 60 stalls on hospital premises. At every stall, nurses and staff would be present to interact with the public.

“A health screening will be held for public. Common tests such as for blood pressure and blood sugar will be done,” he said.

Basic lifesupport – cardio-pulmonary resuscitation - would be demonstrated, while there would also be information on topics such as mosquito control, organ donation, sanitation and disaster management.

A Christmas Cheer Carnival would be held on the two days. This would be a fund-raising event for charitable purposes. Ebenezer Sundarraj, general superintendent of the hospital, said the funds raised from the carnival would go for old age homes and orphanages in Vellore district.

“We will be catering to the needs of 80 to 100 such homes,” he said. Entry is free. While the health check-up will be open from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., stalls and carnival will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the two days.
