During the day, K. Vadivel (38), a cook at a hotel in the city, is busy preparing specialised dishes. Back in his room after work, Mr. Vadivel uses grains of Basmati rice, used in the preparation of biriyani and other dishes, to create works of art. His latest creation is a beautiful flowering plant in a vase, 13 years after he first came out with miniature models of a chariot and a lamp using normal rice grains. The speciality of the flowering plant is that he has used only common gum, and not any supportive rods or tapes. “It took me 55 days to complete the model, which was made of 46,200 grains, with total weight of 700g,” Mr. Vadivel said.

His next work of art would be the Taj Mahal.
