The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by the State government seeking to cancel the bail granted to Pattali Makkal Katchi president G.K. Mani and 361 party men by Judicial Magistrate, Villupuram, in May last year.

The police arrested PMK founder S. Ramadoss, Mr. Mani and others on April 30 last year when they assembled to stage a demonstration opposing registration of cases against their party men and also against the violence resulting in the death of two youths in Marakanam clash. A judicial magistrate granted them bail on May 3.

S. Shanmugavelayutham, State Public Prosecutor, submitted that the magistrate had not considered the seriousness of the matter and mechanically granted them bail.

Dismissing the petition filed by the State government, Justice P. Devadass said there was no weighty reason to cancel the bail.

The judge also pointed out that a single judge of the Madras High Court had already upheld the bail granted to Dr. Ramadoss last February.
