The Madras High Court Bench in Madurai granted anticipatory bail to DMDK leader A. Vijayakant on Monday in a case registered against him by the Kottar police, Kanyakumari district.

The case was registered by the police on July 7 after he allegedly assaulted a public prosecutor in Nagercoil on July 1. He was booked under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) among others.

In her order, Justice R. Mala noted that though Mr. Vijayakant was not arrested for a week after the case was booked, he neither interfered with the investigation nor did he abscond. The judge directed Mr Vijayakant to pay a bond of Rs. 10,000 and appear before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Chennai every day until further orders. If he did not appear before the CMM within 15 days, his anticipatory bail would stand dismissed, she ruled.
