A Pune-based firm is collecting oceanographic data for constructing groynes in villages to protect the fishermen and their properties from sea erosion.
The new facilities will be established in the coastal villages around Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) under the Chief Minister’s Rs. 500 crore special development package programme, according to Collector C. Satyamoorthy. He was addressing a meeting held at Srirenganarayanapuram near KKNPP on Friday evening. The Collector said the entire sum of Rs. 500 crore would be spent for creating additional infrastructure and new facilities such as groynes and cold storages in the beneficiary villages.
A Pune-based firm had been asked to compile oceanographic details from the region for constructing groynes in villages. Once the data was submitted to the government, work on building groynes would be taken up.
“We’ve planned to construct groynes in four villages on an outlay of Rs. 80 crore,” Mr. Samayamoorthy said.
Similarly, cold storages would be established in a few coastal villages to preserve fish catch when the market for marine products slumps. A ‘fish market’ would also be created along with the cold storage. The second tender for this exercise had been floated and work on would commence once the tender was awarded.
Another major development work to be executed in the coastal villages under the special package was the construction of 10,000 houses at the cost of Rs. 300 crore in three phases. Site Director, KKNPP, R. S. Sundar explained the safety measures incorporated in the nuclear reactors. Sub-Collector, Cheranmahadevi, Rohini Ramdas and heads of various local bodies participated.
