The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Wednesday restrained the State government from carrying out any alteration or modification of the structure at the Omandurar Government Estate on Anna Salai here and also from running any hospital activities there until the disposal of an appeal.
An appeal filed by an advocate R. Veeramani against environmental clearance granted by a State-level authority has been pending before the Tribunal.
The Bench said the Tribunal was satisfied that the appellant had made a prima facie case for granting interim injunction.
It pointed out that the Tribunal framed questions on the validity of the environmental clearance granted by the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority on whether it considered all the necessary parameters for conversion. The State government was a party before the proceedings. Hence, any alteration would be considered as an act done contra to the proceedings.

There are 3 government-run medical college hospitals within the interior of the city, but the bureaucracy or the ministers land up in private hospitals when it matters them rather than to get admitted in the 3 government-run medical colleges. What does this mean? Are the doctors in the government medical college hospitals are incompetent to save the lives of the top bureaucracy or the ministers? Or whether these hospitals are ill-equipped in terms of infrastructure? If this is the case then the government shall take necessary efforts to make these medical college hospitals on the lines of AIIMS to serve a larger segment of the population. If the government’s intention is to develop a ‘state of the art multispecialty hospital’, it shall very well start in areas that lack such hospitals. Let the government utilize the present structure for the purpose it was constructed, irrespective of who has sown the seeds for the land mark building.
