Students should update their skills and be abreast of the technologies used in industries, observed M. Rajaram, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, in his Graduation Day address at T.R.P. Engineering College. A total of 247 graduates and post graduates, including four university rank holders, received their degrees. T.R. Pachamuthu, founder-chairman of the college, called upon students to stay away from liquor and strive to eradicate the dowry system in society. T. Tamizharasan, Principal, was present.

Convocation

Graduates need to be collaborative, creative, connected and driven by conscience, Rajani Seshadri, vice-president, Telecom Verticals, TCS, said in her Graduation Day address at M.A.M. College of Engineering and Technology. A total of 250 graduates received their degrees. Medals were awarded to 15 university rank holders. B.V. Ramanan, chairman and managing director, Livia Polymer Bottles Private Limited, Abdul Majedu, chairman, M.A.M. Group of Institutions, Maluk Mohammed, correspondent of the college, were present.

College Day

Participating in the College Day of the Kundhavai Nachiyar Government Arts College for Women, Thanjavur, recently, Housing Minister R. Vaithilingam promised an auditorium to accommodate 5,000 people in connection with the golden jubilee of the college next year. Students should concentrate on education to ensure a brighter future for them. Collector N. Subbaiyan gave away certificates and awards to NSS volunteers. Winners of various contests and those who excelled in academics were honoured on the occasion.

Cultural events

Periyar Annual Cultural Events (PEACE) was celebrated by the Clubs and Societies of Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur. Students of the Department Electronics and Communication Engineering presented a musical show and awareness skits. On behalf of South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, a musical rendition was presented by M. Balamuragan. Registrar T.P. Mani presided. Deputy Director, Department of Art and Culture, R. Gunasekaran, was the chief guest. C.V. Subramanian, Director, Centre for Student Administration Services, presented the list of award winners. Vice-Chancellor N. Ramachandran appreciated the winners of the various competitions. The Department of Aero Space Engineering bagged the overall championship award.

Seminar on SHGS

The Department of Economics, Rajah Serfoji Government Arts College, Thanjavur, conducted a seminar, sponsored by the University Grants Commission and TiSSL International Publications, Belgium, on “Towards stronger and sustainable self-help groups in India.” Principal S. Anabalagan presided. M. Ravichandran, Registrar, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, spoke on the sustainability of the SHG concept. S.M. Suriyakumar, former president of the Association of Economics Teachers, traced the evolution and growth of the concept. T.T. Jayasholan, Head, Management Studies, PRIST University, and P. Ganapathy, Head, Department of Economics, Khadir Mohindeen College, Adirampattinam, spoke. V. Durairaj, Head, Department of Economics, welcomed the gathering. A. Arulraj, organising secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.

Grand celebrations

The 59th College Day was celebrated at the AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, Thanjavur. An illustrious alumnus and Salem Collector K. Maharabhushanam participated as the chief guest.

He shared memorable moments during his college days.

Correspondent K. Thulasiah Vandayar called upon students to follow dharma to reach greater heights. Dean of Arts N. Rajendran welcomed the gathering. Principal U. Balasubramanian read the annual report. Dean of Science G. Ravikumar proposed a vote of thanks. Student toppers in general proficiency and extra curricular activities were honoured.

Technical meet

A state-level technical meet was organised by the Department of Computer Science of the Tamilavel Umamaheswaranar Karanthai Arts College, Thanjavur. Events such as paper presentation, debugging, dumb charade, mime and marketing were conducted to bring out skills of participants. Over 200 students from various institutions competed in the events.

The Government Arts College for Men, Kumbakonam, bagged the overall championship. S. Ramanathan, secretary, Karanthai Tamil Sangam, presided. Principal R. Rajamani inaugurated. G. Shanmugham, coordinator of the college, felicitated the winners.

R. Sivakumar, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science, A.V.V.M. Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, and V. Jayaraj, Director, Computer and Informatics Centre, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, were chief guests. U. Durai, Head, Department of Computer Science, made necessary arrangements.
