Graduates should work towards improving our educational system, said P. Ramasamy, Dean of SSN College of Engineering, Chennai, while delivering the Graduation Day address at Nehru Memorial College. He gave away degree certificates to 740 graduates and post graduates. Twenty rank holders received medals. M. Ponnambalam, chairman, Pon. Balasubramanian, president, Pon. Ravichandran, secretary, and T. Jayaprakasam, Principal, were present.

Sports Day

Olympian Shiny Wilson was the chief guest during the sixth annual sports day celebration of CARE group of institutions. Third year students bagged the overall shield. E. Porselvan and R. Sangavi bagged the individual championship in the men’s and women’s sections respectively. Ms. Wilson gave away prizes in the presence of B. Prative Chand, CEO, CARE group of institutions, and Aarthi Nehru, CEO, CARE International School.

Technical symposium

‘Techquest 15,’ a national-level technical symposium, organised by Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai, attracted 400 students. Ramadoss, Professor, Department of Computer Applications, NIT-Tiruchi, was the chief guest. Events such as quiz, ‘ADSL key,’ ‘code optimisation,’ ‘spell bee,’ and ‘sketch it’ were conducted. Jayabarathan Chelliah, chairman, Florence Jayabarathan, Vice-Chairperson, Jayson K. Jayabarathan, Director, A. Nixon Azariah, Registrar, and P. Balamurugan, Principal, were present.

Convocation

Over 900 graduates and post graduates received their degrees at the 18th Graduation Day of J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai. Twenty seven rank holders got medals. S. Valliappan, Chairman, J.J. group of institutions, N. Subramanian, secretary, Kavitha Subramanian, trustee, Karpaga Vinayaga Educational Trust, and J. Parasuraman, Principal, were present.

Conference

A national conference on ‘Future trends in Applied Mathematics and Computer Technology’ was organised by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of AIMAN College for Women. N. Ramanujam, UGC Emeritus fellow, Department of Mathematics, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, spoke on applications of mathematics in various fields.

The key speakers for the technical session were A.R. Mohamed Shanawaz, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, Jamal Mohamed College, S. Valarmathi, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Bishop Heber College, and Rahuman Hussain, solutions architect, PROBYS Solution, Colorado, USA. M. Nazreen Banu, Professor, Department of MCA, M.A.M. College of Engineering, was the chief guest for the valediction. A. Abdul Majeed, management committee member of AIMAN Education and Welfare Society, M.M. Shahul Hameed, correspondent of the college, and V. Subathra, Principal, were present.

Cultural contest

Cauvery College for Women bagged the overall championship at an inter-collegiate management meet-cum-cultural competition organised by Christhu Raj Institute of Management. A. Arunachalam, chairman, and Seetha Arunachalam, secretary, inaugurated the programme. M.J.I. Raj, Principal, and R.S. Bala Kumar, Director of Management Studies, were present. Students from 28 colleges participated. Competitions including business quiz, mime and group dance were conducted. Muthu Rama Krishnan, Syndicate member, Bharathidasan University, gave away the prizes.

Certificate programme

The P.G and Research Department of Zoology of Holy Cross College in association with Kavin Bioresearch, Chennai, organised a national-level certificate programme on Good Laboratory Practices and Intellectual Property Rights in Biosciences.

Thangamariappan, senior principal investigator, Biocon Cristol – Mayers Squibb Research and Development Centre, Bengaluru, spoke on the importance of quality system concerned with organisational process and conditions under which non-clinical health and environmental studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded and archived. S.P. Subramaniyan, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Chennai, spoke on technical information of the patent and the intellectual property rights. Kalyan Kumar, senior scientist, Vanta Bioscience, Chennai, spoke on the drug design and discovery. Rev. Sr. V. Lilly, secretary of the college, gave away certificates to the participants. Rev. Sr. Jesuin Francis, Principal, Horne Iona Averal, Head, Department of Zoology, and Vinitha Lakshmi, project head, Kavin Bioresearch, Chennai, were present.

Workshop

B. Kalyana Sundaram, Senior Manager, Quality Control, Sri Energy Company, Tiruchi, was the resource person for the workshop on ‘SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reliable, and Time-bound) Goals,’ organised by the Department of BBA of National College. He insisted on being optimistic and industrious towards achieving goals. B. Sekar, Head, Department of BBA, and V. Sri Ramachandran, Professor, Department of English, spoke.

Annual Day

The third Annual Day of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Research and Technology, Perambalur, was celebrated recently. A. Srinivasan, founder and chairman, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan group of institutions, presided. B. Karthikeyan, Principal, presented the annual report. R. Ramkumar, senior manager, Dell India Private Limited, Chennai, was the chief guest. Academic achievers and prize winners at various events were felicitated.

College Day

The students of A.D.M. College for Women (Autonomous) celebrated the 40{+t}{+h}College Day in which R. Mahadevan of Madras High Court and A.D. Jeyem Pandian, founder-president of the college, participated. Mr. Jeyem Pandian, emphasised the need for education by saying that it was an asset and an important tool for empowerment for women. Justice R. Mahadevan lauded the efforts of the management in empowering women through education. He explained the greatness of the Tamil Language, Tamil literature and the Tamil poet Kamban. Velu Nachiyar, Thillaiyadi Valliyammai and Anjalai Ammal who fought against the tyranny of the British should be taken as role models by students. The college union chairman R. Shyamala Devi proposed a vote of thanks. 

Competitions

Various competitions were held in Gnanambigai Government Arts College for Women, Mayiladuthurai. A variety of dramas, historical and social plays were staged. Dramas expressed revolutionary thoughts and commented on recent issues like environment pollution, fast food culture, changes in family set-up. The judges appreciated the enthusiastic performance by students. S. G. Rukmani, Principal in-charge, presided. K. Mangayarkkarasi, fine arts association secretary, and other faculty members of computer science department organised the programme.
