NAGAPATTINAM: 27/02/15: Graduation Day at A.D.M. College for Women in Nagapattinam.

Graduates must equip themselves to face the challenges in the competitive world, develop interpersonal skills to network with people, and should have the willingness to take risks to achieve success, said N.S. Sekar, Vice-President (engineering), Success Factors, Bangalore, while delivering the convocation address at the 13th Graduation Day of Saranathan College of Engineering. He gave away degree certificates in the presence of S. Ravindran, secretary of the college, A. Revathi, Principal, M. Arutchelvi, Dean (Academic), Y. Venkataramani, Dean (R&D), A. Ramesh Babu, Dean (Student Affairs).

Convocation

A nation cannot prosper by neglecting women and importance should be given for women’s empowerment in the society, said Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University. Delivering 33rd Graduation Day address at A.D.M. College for Women, Nagapattinam, he said there was no substitute for hard work. Students should take up research in socially relevant topics to contribute to the betterment of the society and the nation. Founder of the college A.D. Pandian stressed the need for teachers to update their knowledge.

MKU wins trophy

Madurai Kamaraj University won the overall trophy in the State-level inter-collegiate meet, organised by the post graduate and research department of Mathematics of Jamal Mohamed College. Around 270 students from various colleges participated in it. Events such as ‘Dumb-c,’ ‘Math Rangoli,’ ‘Math Wonder,’ ‘Guess Me,’ ‘Master Mind,’ and math quiz were conducted. A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, secretary and correspondent, Jamal Mohamed College, gave away the prizes in the presence of S. Mohamed Salique, Principal, G. Ramachandran, former head, Department of Mathematics, A. Mohamed Ibraheem, Vice-Principal, and S. Ismail Mohideen, Head, Department of Mathematics.

Sports Day

Department of English bagged the overall championship at the 96th Annual Sports Day of National College. Sundarraj Urs, Director General, National Association of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, was the chief guest. D. Prasanna Balaji, Director of Physical Education, presented the annual sports report. K. Raghunathan, secretary, and K. Anbarasu, Principal, were present.

Meet on industrial engineering

An international conference on ‘Advances in production and industrial engineering’ was organised by the Department of Production Engineering of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, under the aegis of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme. Srinivasan Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T, spoke on the amalgamation of academia and industry to meet the challenges in manufacturing. R. Easwaran, General Manager, WRI, BHEL, Tiruchi, appreciated the department for providing a platform for research scholars, academicians, experts from industry and research organisation from all over the world to meet the global challenges of manufacturing through new models and methods.

Tony Schmitz from University of North Carolina, Matthew Franchetti from University of Toledo, Venkat Selvamanickam from University of Houston, USA, and M. S. Shunmugam from IIT-Madras were felicitated for their contribution in the manufacturing and management domain. Kumanan Somasundaram, organising chair of the conference, spoke on the theme of the conference. Technical papers were presented by researchers and academicians.

Learn art of interpretation

“History is the mother of social sciences,” said Arun Bandopadhyay, former Nurul Hasan Professor of History and Dean of Arts, University of Calcutta, while addressing the PG Club and History Association of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College. He explained the essential qualities required for a historian and said that history was a tool for understanding the present. He insisted that the interpretation of history should be done in an objective way and motivated the students to come forward to learn the art of interpretation.

Outreach programme

M.A.M College of Engineering and Technology in association with the U.S. Consulate organised an outreach programme ‘Passport to America.’ The objective was to promote awareness of educational opportunities in the US. Students and faculty members from various institutions including T.R.P. Engineering College, K. Ramakrishnan College of Technology, and Saranathan College of Engineering participated.

Edward J. Cox, Consular Officer, U.S. Consulate, Chennai, elaborated on the visa approval processes. Vinu Jacob, visa assistant, Consular Information Unit, Shanthi, coordinator, Education USA, spoke. M.A. Maluk Mohamed, director of the college, and Raji Venkateswaran, professor and head, department of career development and placement, were present.
