A plea to the State Government to write off the entire farm loans was made by a section of farmers at the monthly farmers’ grievances day meeting here on Friday.

After three years of severe drought conditions, the district of late has experienced some rainfall. The farmers who suffered severe financial loss in the last three years will not be able to commence the farm activities due to fund crunch.

They have no other option but to approach the cooperative bodies for farm loans. The cooperative societies direct the farmers to repay the loan arrears for getting fresh loans. Repayment of loan arrears is beyond the capacity of farmers at the present juncture, they said and demanded the government to write off the entire loan arrears. K. A. Govindasamy, president, Tamil Nadu Tapioca Farmers Association, urged the District Collector K. Maharabushanam to forward the resolution to the State Government.
