About 92.16% of students who had appeared for the SSLC examination from Tiruvannamalai district have come out successful. The pass percentage had gone up by 3.13 from last year’s 89.03. The district has also emerged 26th in the rank list, while it had ranked 30th last year.
Also, the government schools have scored over the self-financing schools in the district. Among the 33,080 students (16,562 boys 16,518 girls) who had sat for the examination 30,488 (14,919 boys and 15,569 girls) had passed in the district. A total of 152 schools got centum pass percentage while last year, just 120 schools had secured a centum pass percentage.
Of the total 483 schools that had sent their students for the examination including government (317 schools), self financing matriculation (106 schools), self financing (15 schools), aided (10 schools), partly aided (23 schools), Adi Dravidar Welfare (7 schools), Forest Department (1 school), Social Welfare Department (1 school) and Municipality (3 schools), the government schools that had sent 22,133 students with 20,077 of them passing, had registered a pass percentage of 90.71.
This was 3.97% more compared to last year. Whereas self financing matriculation schools that sent 5,307 students with 5,237 students of them passing, had registered a pass percentage of 98.68. Though their pass percentage was higher than that of the government schools, they registered a mere 0.13% improvement from last year’s 98.55%.
Marginal improvement
Third biggest contributor in terms of volume was the aided schools. They had sent 2,179 students with 1,898 of them passing and registered a pass percent of 87.10. This was only a marginal improvement from last year’s 86.86%.
With other categories of schools sending fewer students their impact on overall pass percentage was negligible. Government schools had improved their performance against all odds including vacancies in the teacher posts and lack of drive on the part of the parents.
V.Jayakumar, Chief Educational Officer, attributed the good results of the government schools to efforts taken by them.
“We selected 75 most vulnerable schools from the list of government schools in the district and took concerted efforts to improve their performance. We have conducted night classes for the students. Special care was taken on slow learners. Special classes were conducted amidst exam too,’’ Mr. Jayakumar added.
