Retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan named to head commission of inquiry

Following up on its assurance that a one-person inquiry commission would be constituted to go into the police firing in Thoothukudi that led to the death of 10 persons on Tuesday, the government on Wednesday named retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan to conduct the inquiry.

The retired High Court judge will probe the law and order incidents in Thoothukudi on May 22 when several thousands of protesters defied the curfew in place and submit a report to the government, an official release said.

The announcement was made after a meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami at the Secretariat to review the situation following the violence in Thoothukudi.

Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, senior Ministers Dindigul C. Sreenivasan, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Sellur K. Raju, P. Thangamani, S.P. Velumani, D. Jayakumar, C.Ve. Shanmugam, M.C. Sampath, K.C. Karuppannan, R. Kamaraj, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi and Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran were among those present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who was in Udhagamandalam, cut short his visit and returned to Chennai on Wednesday.

Meeting in Raj Bhavan

Later on Wednesday night, Mr. Palaniswami and Mr. Panneerselvam met Mr. Purohit at Raj Bhavan here. Official sources said the meeting was primarily to discuss the firing incidents in Thoothukudi on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mr. Jayakumar, Ms. Vaidyanathan and Mr. Rajendran were also present at the meeting.
