The State Government and its undertakings have initiated various policies and projects to industrialise the nine southern districts of Tamil Nadu, said Dheeraj Kumar, Commissioner of Industries and Director of Industries and Commerce.
Of the total 99 blocks in southern districts, 70 have been identified as industrially backward. Industries were offered special incentives to setup their ventures in these blocks, he said. He was delivering a lecture on ‘Government initiatives on industrialisation of southern districts’ organised in Madurai on Friday by Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA).
Mr. Dheeraj said that public sector undertakings such as Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and Tamil Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) undertaking various projects.
While SIDCO has already sanctioned two industrial estates in last fiscal, land acquisition for new industrial estates for this fiscal had begun. In addition to these, Madurai and Tirunelveli have been chosen for establishing industrial estates exclusively for micro enterprises.
SIPCOT had declared Madurai – Tuticorin as an industrial corridor and was developing it. The Nanguneri SEZ had been notified by the Central Government, which is the final step in this process.
Cluster model of development for small industries had also been accorded priority by the State Government, he said. These clusters would be used by the State Government to provide common facilities such as testing centres for a group of small and cottage industries.
N. Somasundaram, MADITSSIA president, presented a memorandum to the Industries Commissioner, pressing various demands.
