DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday accused the State government of doing nothing about the receding prospects of kuruvai crop this year, and noted that this would be the second consecutive year that farmers would have to forgo the short-term paddy crop.
In a statement here, he said the water level in Mettur had touched a 17-year low of 20 feet and the agriculture department and farmers’ associations had advised the farmers not to go ahead with kuruvai cultivation.
He said in the present circumstances, water from the dam was unlikely to be released on June 12 and kuruvai was ruled out in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and other Delta districts.
Commenting on spiralling prices of essential commodities, Mr. Karunanidhi said prices were probably not being checked because the regime wanted more and more people to throng Amma canteens.
