Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosiah on Friday invited AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa to form the government after he accepted the resignation of O. Panneerselvam, who served as Chief Minister for the nearly seven-month-period when she was out of office.
The development followed the AIADMK legislature party meeting at the party’s headquarters on Friday morning, where all the MLAs unanimously elected Ms. Jayalalithaa leader of the party, enabling her return to the post of Chief Minister.
On Friday afternoon, Ms. Jayalalithaa will make her first public appearance — after her May 11 acquittal — when she will garland statues of former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai, M.G. Ramachandran and Dravidian icon Periyar.
Ms. Jayalalithaa is widely expected to be sworn in on Saturday, the ceremony marking her political comeback after the Karnataka High Court acquitted her and three others of serious corruption charges in the disproportionate assets case.
