Governor inaugurates Korean Consulate

To take care of the growing trade between two nations, South Korea on Friday announced the opening of its Consulate in Chennai and commencement of visa processing services.

Governor K. Rosaiah inaugurated the Office of the Korean Consulate General at 29, Radhakrishnan Salai on Friday by unveiling a plaque.

Kyungsoo Kim, the Consulate General for Chennai, said it was the first diplomatic office to be opened in South India.

South Korean Ambassador to India Joon Gyu Lee said that establishment of Chennai Consulate fulfilled their dream of having a full fledged office in South India with an intention to strengthen the trade between the two countries.

Currently, about 4,000 Koreans stay in and around Chennai, about 150 small and medium enterprises are run by Koreans and there are large firms including Hyundai Motor, Samsung Electronics, Lotte India and Doosan Heavy Industries among others functioning here, Mr. Lee said.

He said that Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor was set to emerge as biggest corridor in the next few years.

Honorary Consul Venu Srinivasan said that the new Consulate would deepen the cultural ties and strengthen trade between two countries.
