The public in Erode district have responded overwhelmingly to the Postal Department’s ‘Sukanya Samridhi Account' scheme, conceptualised by the Central Government to generate attractive benefits to girl children in the long-run.
Within a few months of launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, parents have opened at least 10,000 savings accounts in the name of their daughters below 10 years of age. The district witnessed opening of 8,000 accounts during February - March. In view of the huge rush at the counters, the working hours were extended and the Department had to function even on Sundays in the second fortnight of March, sources said.
The momentum generated last fiscal is continuing this month. On Wednesday, District Collector S. Prabakar received pass book for the scheme from his daughter P. Prakalya, in the presence of Senior Postal Department officials. Officials said the scheme was a boon to parents to meet expenditure towards education / marriage of their daughters.
