There has been big demand for saplings raised by Isha nursery unit at Vaitheeswarankoil near here, with women from neighbouring towns and farmers making a beeline to the farm.

The farm has been producing as many as 10,000 nurseries every month and sells an equal number to individuals and institutions.

Availability of a wide range of nurseries of shade-giving trees, timber-value varieties, attractive flowers and ornamental varieties were the main reasons for customers buying them, said K. Saravanan, who has been raising the nurseries at the farm spread over an area of about half an acre.

The low price, Rs. 7 a sapling, was another reason for the customers making bulk purchase at the farm.

It had been gaining patronage among the masses to such an extent that a good number of schools in and around Vaitheeswarankoil make it a point to present saplings to winners of various competitions, including sports events, said K. Mohandas, a parent.

He said that he had been purchasing the quality saplings and had planted about 100 of them so far.
