Good decision soon on Mettur dam: Minister

July 05, 2010 11:44 pm | Updated 11:44 pm IST - SALEM:

“The Chief Minister is having discussions with senior officials of Public Works Department [PWD] on when to open the Stanley reservoir at Mettur for Delta irrigation and soon a good decision will be taken,” said Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam here on Monday.

After inspecting construction work of the Super Speciality Hospital, he said that the dam could not be opened on the mandatory date of June 12 since inflow had drastically fallen. “Hence, the opening has been postponed.”

But, farmers in Delta had begun their farming activities using water from borewells. With the Chief Minister already having consultations with PWD officials, a good decision to this effect would soon be taken.

He asked the officials to expedite the hospital project. The Chief Minister is expected to declare it open on August 20, along with other projects. He would also distribute aid to the tune of Rs.250 crore to beneficiaries.

District Revenue Officer V. Kalai Arasi and other senior officials accompanied the Minister during his inspection.
