MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Wednesday said the government should give up the Salem-Chennai green corridor project, taking into consideration the objection raised by the people in five districts against it.

In a statement, he said if the government decided to suppress the people’s protest against various projects with the help of police power, it would prove counterproductive.

“The road will be laid through 257 km cultivable lands and 13.30 km thick forests.”

“It will also destroy natural resources and lands in eight hill regions, including Kanjamalai, Jarukumalai and Kalrayanmalai,” he alleged. Meanwhile, the DMK has announced a protest against the project at the Salem Collectorate on June 23. It will be led by former Union Minister Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan.
