Tension prevailed at the District Headquarters Hospital here on Thursday after the alleged suicide of M. Swathi, 17, a Plus-Two student of the Government Higher Secondary School at Veerapandi.

She was found hanging in the kitchen of her house at Palavanchipalayam in the morning.

Her relatives blocked the road in front of the hospital for a while, demanding the arrest of two teachers whom they held responsible for her death, on the basis of a note said to have been found near her body.

Chief Educational Officer N. Anandhi told The Hindu that the headmistress of the school, Dhanalakshmi, was placed under suspension in the “interest of people and students.”

The services of Priya, class teacher of Swathi, who was on “temporary payroll,” were terminated.

Asked about the contents of the suicide note, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) R. Thirunavukkarasu told The Hindu that it said the headmistress was strict, and her class teacher was talking only to select students.
