In a case of medical oddity, a 12-year-old girl from Agarapalayam in Arni in Tiruvannamalai district was brought to the city with complaints of ‘spewing sand’ from her eyes.
Yuva Rani, the eldest of three children of farmhands Banu and Sekar, while playing with her two siblings on August 7, complained of irritation in the eyes. Banu administered a few drops of coconut oil on the eyes of the children.
However, Yuva Rani continued to complain of irritation and ‘spew’ sand from her eyes. The parents took her to an ophthalmologist. Banu claims her daughter continued to complain of irritation, and sand particles were removed from her eyes for several days. On the doctor’s advice, they took the girl to the CMC, Vellore, where she was kept under observation for two days.
But the problem returned last week. The villagers ostracised the woman and her daughter. A report in a daily led to the Health Department taking up the issue and medical officials brought the family to the city.
Yuva Rani has been admitted to Udhie Eye Hospital. Ophthalmologist R. Ravindran said on Thursday: “When the girl complained of irritation, I examined her and removed two sand granules. We will keep her under observation for a week.”
