Sidelined deputy general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Amma) T.T. V. Dhinakaran on Friday sought to disassociate his group from attending the proposed general council convened by factions in the AIADMK (Amma) owing allegiance to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) headed by Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam.

Referring to the announcement on the general council scheduled for September 12, Mr. Dhinakaran quoted Rule 20 (vi) of the bye-laws of the AIADMK on “powers and responsibilities” of the general secretary to convene meetings of the executive and general council. Likewise, under Rule 19 (vii), in the event of one-fifth of members of the general council requesting the general secretary to convene a special meeting of the council, the latter should do so in 30 days. These rules formed part of the bye-laws “recognised” by the Election Commission.

“There is no link between our Kazhagam [AIADMK-Amma] and the announcement regarding the September 12 meeting,” Mr Dhinakaran contended, adding that only V.K.Sasikala, the jailed interim general secretary, could call meetings of the general council and the executive.

Accusing his detractors of attempting to create confusion among members of the party, he urged his colleagues not to attend the meeting. And if they did action would have to be taken against them, Mr. Dhinakaran warned.

He made it clear that legal action would be taken against those who were responsible for the announcement. He pointed out that a communication on the announcement did not carry the signature of anyone. It also did not mention the agenda, Mr. Dhinakaran added.
