E. Gayathri, veena maestro, has been appointed the first Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University. She will hold the office for three years, according to a government order issued last week.

Till now, she held the posts of honorary director of Tamil Nadu Government Music Colleges and principal of Government Music College, Chennai.

Born to parents who were devoted to music, 54-year-old Gayathri started giving Veena performances even as a child and was popularly known as “Baby Gayathri.”

Trained by Sangita Kalanidhi T. M. Thiagarajan, she has performed over the years across the world.

A recipient of several honours and awards, she got the ‘Kalaimamani’ title of the Tamil Nadu government in 1984; the Kumar Gandharv award of theMadhya Pradesh government in 1999 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for 2002.
