Many in Coonoor were greeted by two unusual visitors early on Friday.

People heading for work in vehicles, and on foot were surprised to see two Indian gaurs near the Supply Depot. One of them was occupying the middle of the road.

Among those held up were people heading for the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, and school students.

The police said that the animals had strayed from a nearby forest.

Motorists and pedestrians exercised restraint, and did not chase away the animals.

After moving about for a couple of hours the gaurs found their way back to the forest.

Forest officials said that whenever such incidents occur, people should remain calm.

On no account they should throw stones at the animals or agitate them.
