The small and medium scale textile manufacturers have appealed to the government to set up a state-run training centre to manufacture requisite numbers of skilled personnel for garment production.
The requisition was among the list of demands sent by the industrialists to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
“We are asking for training centre as the garment cluster faces extreme shortage of skilled workers, who have the ability to produce value-added apparels”, said M. P. Muthurathinam, president of Tirupur Exporters and Manufacturers Association.
The manufacturers also reiterated the need for government assistance to construct houses for migrant workers employed in the cluster.
“Tirupur cluster has always depended on the migrant labour.
But the soaring house rentals are now driving away many youth from the cluster.
Unless affordable housing is provided, the cluster will not be any more an attraction for workers from outside the district”, pointed out the industrialists.
The entrepreneurs wanted the government to take up infrastructure development on a war-footing. “Presently, the roads are too congested ”, said Mr. Muthurathinam.
