The Traffic Police have asked the Chennai Corporation to keep all compactors out of the route taken by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
The recommendation follows repeated disruptions caused by these machines to the movement of the Chief Minster’s convoy.
The plea also applies to other large vehicles used in the execution of conservancy operations.
The Chennai Corporation operates 4,523 vehicles of varying sizes for this purpose.
The latest instance where a compactor hindered the movement of the Chief Minister’s convoy was on August 17.
According to sources in a private conservancy operator, the vehicle had a flat tyre on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai in Mylapore, and ended up blocking the way of the Chief Minister’s convoy.
The vehicle was quickly pulled off the convoy’s path, and the minor crisis was dealt with effectively.
But the incident has raised several security concerns.
Alternative route
And, as a result, the Traffic Police have asked the Corporation to stop compactors from entering Cathedral Road, Binny Road, Radhakrishnan Salai and Kamarajar Salai. The alternative route suggested includes T. T. K. Road, Alwarpet Junction, Oliver Road, Luz Corner, Kutchery Road and Karaneeswarar Pagoda Street. Compactors headed towards Kamarajar Salai have to take routes that involve Lloyds Road, Dr.Natesan Road and Dr.Ambedkar Bridge.
