A large number of garbage collection workers (Thooimai Kavalargal), who were recruited under Swachh Bharat programme, from Sanarpatti, Batlagundu and Nilakottai thronged the Collectorate here on Monday condemning denial of jobs to them and inordinate delay in settling wages. They demanded that they be given job for at least for 300 days in a year

They charged the contractors of sacking them suddenly with a plan to recruit another batch for garbage collection, segregation and recycling work in panchayat unions. “We cannot go for any other work. Moreover, we are not permitted to go for work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme,” they said.

Later, they gave a petition to Collector in charge P. Baskaran.
