VIRUDHUNAGAR

In an effort to keep the surroundings clean without causing any inconvenience to the people, Virudhunagar Municipality has launched a mass cleaning campaign at night.

Initiating the idea, Collector A. Sivagnanam said officials of the district administration and the municipality had been planning for sometime ways to keep the town and peripheries clean during daytime without causing inconvenience to the people visiting markets and hospitals.

As part of the efforts, Project Director (District Rural Development Agency) Tilakavathi and Assistant Director (Panchayats) Kadarmir assessed manpower requirements for night cleaning operation.

On Saturday (January 13) night, municipality conservancy workers were spread to different locations, including Periyarpalayam, Paranginathapuram, Pullalakottai Road, Railway Feeder Road, Aruppukottai Road and B1B1 Road.

The officials said after sensitising the people, night cleaning would be implemented wherever required. Garbage generated by markets and restaurants, which closed by night, could be removed at night itself, they said.

The Collector said the government’s initiatives to keep the environment clean would become really successful only with public cooperation.

He said the people would be reached out through media and mass contact programmes on the need for personal hygiene to avoid spread of communicable diseases. Pamphlets would be distributed to the public, and educational institutions would be roped in to carry out cleanliness programmes across the district soon.

The municipality officials said on an average, the conservancy workers removed close to 50 tonnes of garbage from the town. Deployment of lorries and bulldozers in the nights would not affect vehicle movement. However, allocating manpower might be difficult, they added.
