The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam staged a demonstration here protesting against the Supreme Court’s verdict to GAIL pipeline project here on Thursday. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) affiliated farmers’ wing said that the State Government had failed to put up a steadfast argument infront of the Supreme Court.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mallaiyan, District Secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam said, the pipeline would affect an estimated 500 acres of cultivable lands in five unions of the district. This include garden lands, lush fields and groves in Nallampalli, Paaparapatty, Indur, Palaccode and Kaarimangalam.
According to Mr. Mallaiyan many fields that has come under acquisition have bore wells sunk by farmers at a heavy cost. The farmers’ association also alleged that the actual social costs that would be borne by the farmers in the wake of the pipeline were not well represented with facts before the Supreme Court leading to the current ruling. “GAIL has also unleashed false propaganda against the farmers protestations to the project,” Mr. Mallaiyan said.
Farmers from across the district arrived here opposite BSNL on Thursday to stage protest demonstration.
