Funds to usher in IT into polytechnics

May 26, 2014 01:08 pm | Updated 01:08 pm IST - CHENNAI:

In the next few months, at least nine polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu will receive funds from the Union government to upgrade facilities.

More than Rs. 11 crore will be available for the polytechnics to bring IT into teaching, learning and testing, and to introduce new diploma courses. Polytechnics in Krishnagiri, Udhagamandalam, Coimbatore, Nagapattinam, Tiruchi and Aranthangi, besides the polytechnics for women in Taramani, Coimbatore and Madurai, will benefit.

This is only the second instalment, officials say.

The project puts the onus on the principals of the polytechnics, who, in consultation with the respective regional National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, must submit a list of equipment required. The list will be vetted by the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research before purchase, the officials say.

The grant of funds comes with several riders, say the officials. The institutions must provide a performance report every quarter to the HRD Ministry. Improperly audited funds will result in release of subsequent funds halted.

The institutions must follow the mandatory reservation for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in posts and services to be eligible for the funds.
