The last few calls made by E. Ilavarasan, the Dalit youth who was found dead along the railway track in Dharmapuri on July 4, reveal his tendency to commit suicide, police investigation has revealed.
Minutes before his death, the youth called two of his friends, one in Chennai and another in Chittoor, and expressed his frustration and anguish over being left alone. The two have given statements before the Judicial Magistrate confirming that Ilavarasan had called them to say that he was going to commit suicide, police sources told The Hindu on Thursday.
In his statement recorded by the Harur Judicial Magistrate Aseema Banu under Section 164 of Cr.PC, Karthik of Chittoor said Ilavarasan called him on July 4 morning and said he was alone consuming liquor behind the Government Arts College in Dharmapuri. He expressed his frustration and decision to commit suicide, the sources said.
According to Manoj Kumar of Chennai, Ilavarasan called him to say that he was going to commit suicide. He expressed serious concern over his wife Divya leaving him. “Kumar quoted Ilavarasan as saying that he saw Divya without her ‘thali’ in the Madras High Court and also laughing while walking away with her brother,” an investigator said.
When contacted, Dharmapuri Superintendent of Police Asra Garg said that though complete normality had returned to Dharmapuri, adequate security was given to the family of Divya and Ilavarasan.
No torture
Meanwhile, details of the second post-mortem examination done by a three-member team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, are available. The autopsy report said there was no evidence of torture/physical violence on any part of Ilavarasan’s body.
The team headed by Dr. D.N. Bhardwaj, Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, AIIMS, was of the unanimous opinion that the cause of death was extensive cranio-cerebral damage or head injury.
“The head injury as well as other injuries are ante-mortem in nature and will result in instantaneous death. The injuries mentioned including fatal injury could be caused by the impact of running train,” the team concluded.
The report said toxicological analysis of viscera had established consumption of alcohol in sufficient quantity to place him under its influence. The team perused 16 photographs and visited the scene of crime to arrive at a logical conclusion.
