The Mamallapuram police on Thursday obtained an arrest warrant against Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss from a Thirukkazhukundram court, even as a bail petition seeking his release was moved before a Villupuram court.
Dr. Ramadoss, who was arrested in Villupuram on Tuesday along with other party leaders when he led a protest demonstration in defiance of prohibitory orders, is detained in the Tiruchi central prison.
A team of advocates, led by K. Balu, PMK’s legal wing president, moved a bail petition before the Judicial Magistrate Court-I, Villupuram. The petition will be taken up on Friday.
Mr. Balu said judicial remand of Dr. Ramadoss, party president G. K. Mani and others was ordered by Mugilambigai, who was in charge of JM I court, and Sivakumar took over as JM on Thursday. Since the police had to file a counter and the new judicial officer had to study the case, hearing had been posted for Friday.
Meanwhile, the latest arrest warrant against Dr. Ramadoss was in connection with a case filed under Sections 143 and 188 of the Indian Penal Code on the charges of indulging in acts that disturbed public peace and for violation of conditions laid down for conducting Chithirai Muzhinilavu Peruvizha in Mamallapuram on April 25. The arrest warrant would be served on him at the Tiruchi prison, police said.
Mr. Mani, Vanniyar Sangam president and MLA, J. Guru, former Union Minister A. K. Moorthy, former Chengalpattu MLA K. Arumugham were among those against whom the case has been filed.
Case altered
The Marakkanam police have altered the case relating to the death of P. Selvaraj (32) of Venmaankondan in Ariyalur district from that of “death under suspicious circumstances” (Section 304) to that of a case of murder (Section 302).
Police sources said the alteration was made on the basis of investigation and post-mortem report (that is said to have established that the death occurred due to attack with sharp-edged weapons).
It was earlier said that Selvaraj and Vivek of Thanjavur were killed in road accidents and not in the clash that erupted between those proceeding to Mamallapuram and residents of Kattayan Theru in Marakkanam.
