The Civil Supplies Department will start distributing 35 kg of free rice to below-the-poverty-line card-holders from July, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said here on Monday.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Rangasamy said that as promised in the election manifesto of the All India N.R. Congress, the government would start distributing rice to BPL card-holders from July.
However, implementation of other promised programmes, including distribution of 25 kg of rice to the above-poverty-line card-holders and 15 kg to yellow card-holders, would take some more time.
Expressing happiness over the Medical Council of India's decision to renew admission for the current academic year in the government medical college, he said that in the coming days steps would be taken to provide all additional facilities in the college. Efforts would be made to appoint the required staff, including teachers, he added. Referring to the Congress party's criticism against his government for retrenching workers, Mr. Rangasamy said that only those who have been appointed illegally were removed. Appointment of these workers by the previous government was made in haste without considering the financial position of corporations and societies in which they were placed, he said.
On the Congress' charge against him that he was trying to victimise people, Mr. Rangasamy said the Congress had also removed persons appointed by him.
“250 women removed”
“You should not forget that 250 women appointed by me were removed after V. Vaithilingam took over as Chief Minister,” he said.
Mr. Rangasamy also said that he was not in favour of removing people from jobs. “Our government's aim is to provide more job opportunities,” he said.
