Free goats to 190 beneficiaries

Rural Industries Minister P. Mohan gave away goats worth Rs. 24 lakh to 190 beneficiaries at a function got up at Sankarapuram block near here. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mohan said the scheme was launched by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa with the objective of improving the lives of rural women, particularly widows and destitutes.

Under the free goat scheme, as many as 20,752 women in Villupuram district were benefited to the tune of Rs. 26.50 crore and milch animals worth Rs. 9.65 crore were given away to 2,550 beneficiaries.

For attending to the health needs of these animals, the Chief Minister had sanctioned a sum of Rs. 4.5 crore for construction of 17 veterinary clinics in the district. Later, the Minister also inaugurated four overhead tanks, each built at a cost of Rs. 1.50 lakh.

District Collector V.Sampath, District Revenue Officer R.Brindadevi, Assistant Director (Animal Husbandry) Rajendran and others participated.
