A four-year-old LKG student was run over by a school van at Budalur in Thanjavur district on Friday.
The fatal accident occurred inside the campus of the Our Lady of Health Matriculation High School in the morning. Police gave the name of the victim as M. Nandhini of Orathur. A group of 30 students, including Nandhini, travelled in the van to the school and alighted upon reaching the institution.
Police sources said one of the books carried by Nandhini in the school bag fell down and the girl bent down to take it. She was close to the front wheel of the vehicle while trying to take the book which was not noticed by caretaker Sofia.
The driver moved the vehicle, which ran over the girl causing her death on the spot, the police said. Van driver B. Ramachandran, aged around 25 years, was arrested and the vehicle was seized. The Budalur police have registered a case.
Following the accident, parents of the victim, along with some others, staged a road blockade at Budalur four-road junction, demanding action against the school administration.
A senior revenue official held talks with the protestors who dispersed later.
