Tragedy struck a Tumkuru family that was on its way to Velankanni for a pilgrimage over the Ugadi weekend, claiming four lives and injuring seven others, here on Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri national highway on Thursday. Among the deceased were three women and a child.

The victims, Elizabeth Sathyavathy (52), her daughter Sushma (29) and daughter-in-law Pooja (27), were killed on the spot. Her grandson Gerard (6) died at the hospital.

Seven other passengers, including three children, were admitted to Dharmapuri Government medical college hospital.

Chandramadhu’s family members - his wife Elizabeth, his son Punish Kumar’s wife Pooja, and their son Gerard; his daughter Sushma, along with Chandramadhu’s two other sons with their wives and children, had left Tumkur in the early hours of Thursday for Velankanni.

The SUV carrying the 11 passengers, with one of Chandramadhu’s sons Amruth behind the wheel, was passing the Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri national highway near old Dharmapuri, when the vehicle brushed a lorry that was parked by the road side near Maatukaaranur.The SUV slid down the highway and toppled over a farmland, killing Elizabeth, Sushma and Pooja instantly, while the boy Gerard died at Dharmapuri government medical college hospital.
