Four killed; 15 injured in accident near Pennagaram

Four persons killed and fifteen people were injured in the Lorry-Mini Van collision near Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district on Monday evening.

Police sources told The Hindu that the accident occurred when a group of people are proceeding for a death in Dhinnappatti village near Papparappatti from Bommahalli village near Karimangalam in a mini van. The accident took place near Mamarathupallam near Alamarathupatti village on the Papparapatti-Pennagaram village road. The mini-van over-tuned after hitting the cement-laden lorry from the opposite direction.

Three people died on the spot. One died on the way to the hospital.

Of the injured eleven persons were admitted in the Government Medical College Hospital in Dharmapuri. All of them were said to be out of danger.

Eleven of the injured persons admitted in Dharmapuri were; C. Raju 35 (women), K. Vijaya 45, P. Sivan 40, Seevalpattu, M. Belathai 55,M. Sivan 48, D. Paruran 60 M. Perumal 36, M. Muniyappan 41, M. Nandakumar 27, M. Roja 45, K. Nandini 4.

Four others were admitted at the District Headquarters Hospital in Pennagaram. The drivers of the two vehicles are said to be absconding from the scene. Papparapatti police have registered a case and are investigating.

In the absence of the proper bus facility to the Dhinnappatti village the people were forced to travel in mini-van. Though the transportation of people in goods carriers was banned by the district administration, the practice of travelling in Mini-vans, Lorries and tractors among the rural people is unabated due to poor bus facility to the remote villages.
