Four held for killing DMK leader

The police on Monday arrested four persons on the charge of murdering V. Subramani, who functioned as a ‘district representative’ of DMK, on January 5.

The arrested were: Ajmeer Kaja (28), Toufeeq Aslam (24), both hailing from Theni district; R. Mariappan (33), a native of Dindigul district; and Mohammed Hakkim (32) of Tirupur.

Two motorcycles as well as the three deadly weapons they used had been seized.

The main accused in the case, S.P. Mani, a senior local leader of DMK and former chairman of 15 Velampalayam Municipality and seven others were still at large.

City Police Commissioner S. N. Seshasai told reporters here that the four were hired by Mani.

Ajmeer Kaja, Toufeeq Aslam, and Mariappan were involved in crimes in various parts of the State.

Ajmeer Kaja and Toufeeq Aslam were working in textile units in Tirupur during day hours and did sales of food item using push carts during the night.

Mariappan was a functionary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, he added.

Mr. Seshasai said that Mani promised to pay Rs. 5 lakh to the accused, and gave Rs. 1 lakh as the first instalment.

All the remaining accused including Mani will be arrested shortly, he added.
