Police have made a breakthrough in the case relating to the attempt on the life of BJP functionary Ashwin Kumar here by arresting four people involved in the attack on Monday evening.

Contrary to widespread speculation that the attack was carried out by a group of Muslims, the police have arrested four non-Muslims in the case.

The police identified the accused as R. Manikandan (22), M. Manikandan (38), T. Muthuramalingam (39) and M. Sathish Kumar (22), a driver.

The police said the accused were mercenaries and the attack was due to previous enmity. They were produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said they were looking for three more accused in the case.
