The Karaikal police here rescued a fibre-boat with four fishermen stranded mid-sea in the early hours on Wednesday morning.
Mathiazhagan (38) along with his two sons Mathiarasan (20) and Poovarasan (16), and accompanied by another fisherman Manivel (20), all from Karaikalmedu fishing habitation had ventured into the sea on Tuesday night, when their fibre boat developed a technical snag at around eight nautical miles from the coast. According to B. Srikanth, Senior Superintendent of Police, the police were alerted based on an SOS call to 1048, and a 12-tonne rescue boat was pressed into service. A team consisting of a sub-inspector along with three constables was sent to rescue the stranded fishermen back to safety. Their fibre-boat was also tugged along to safety.
Addressing the press here, Dr. Srikanth urged the fishermen to use the toll free numbers 1048 and 1093 to communicate with the coastal police without a glitch in times of emergency.
