Four drinking water projects to be commissioned by June

Collector says a DPR on a ₹ 27.27-cr. drinking water project has been forwarded to the govt.

The district administration which is executing six drinking water projects at a total cost of ₹346.32 crore to cover 9.69 lakh people has proposed to commission four of them by June.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting some of the projects on Friday, Collector M. Karunakaran said the district, with a population of 30.77 lakh in a corporation, seven municipalities, 36 town panchayats, 19 panchayat unions and 425 village panchayats, had to provide adequate drinking water to all the people from the Tamirabarani.

The district administration recently commissioned two schemes – a combined drinking water scheme for 34 habitations in Manur and Palayamkottai unions and another for Pattamadai town panchayat.

In this series, a ₹32.40-crore project to benefit 1.13 lakh people living in 170 habitations in Manur and Palayamkottai panchayat unions was being executed, and it would be commissioned by June to supply 55 litres of drinking water to each beneficiary daily.

For the benefit of 1.55 lakh people living in 163 habitations in Kadayam, Pappakudi and Keezhapavoor unions, a ₹46.55-crore drinking water project was being implemented. It would be commissioned by June to give 90 litres of water to each person in town panchayat areas and 40 litres to each person in 163 village panchayats every day.

The ₹31.32-crore Sankarankovil–Alangulam Combined Drinking Water Scheme would be also commissioned by June to benefit 1.56 lakh people. This scheme would also benefit 147 wayside rural habitations.

For giving 11,350 domestic drinking water connections in Kadayanallur municipality, a scheme was being executed at a cost of ₹ 6.05 crore.

Four infiltration wells were being sunk in the Tamirabarani at Muththalankurichi in Thoothukudi to supply drinking water to 100 habitations in Valliyoor union and 13 village panchayats around Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.

Referring to the proposed ₹230-crore drinking water project for taking water from the Tamirabarani in Ariyanayagipuram to Tirunelveli Corporation, the Collector said preliminary works on the project, which would benefit 4.95 lakh people, had been started.

He said tender would be floated for executing a ₹543.20-crore drinking water scheme to cover 4.35 lakh people in Sankarankovil, Puliyangudi, Rajapalayam, Sivakasi and Tiruthangal municipalities and Tiruvenkatam town panchayat.

“A detailed project report on executing a ₹ 27.27-crore drinking water scheme to benefit 29,320 people in 64 village panchayats in Reddiyarpatti, Notchikulam, Muthur, Sivanthipatti, Ittaeri and Puthukkulam village panchayats has been forwarded to the government,” he said.

The Collector also inspected the concrete floor being laid at Mukkoodal bus stand along with Cheranmahadevi Sub-Collector V. Vishnu.
