Actor Ramya Krishnan, who was supplied with a faulty generator three years ago, is set to receive Rs.50,000 compensation from its manufacturer and dealer.
A district consumer forum here also ordered refund of Rs.4.6 lakh paid for the equipment along with nine per cent interest from the date of purchase.
In her complaint, she said she had purchased a diesel generator manufactured by Ashok Leyland from its authorised dealer on July 23, 2010, for Rs.4.6 lakh. The set failed to function effectively from day one.
When she complained to the service personnel, they did some remedial measures but the problem persisted. Though the service engineer changed the alternator of the set, it did not work. Further within a short period of purchase, the generator set had corroded.
Manufacturer's denialThe DG set, instead of giving uninterrupted power, had given uninterrupted problem, Ms. Krishnan said. However, the manufacturer denied her averments.
Disposing of her complaint, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (North), headed by its president R. Mohandoss, concluded that the set which was purchased by the complainant was having inherent manufacturing defect.
“The opposite parties (the manufacturer and the dealer) were negligent and deficient enough in not rectifying the defect in time. Hence they are liable to compensate the complainant,” the forum said.
