K. Sourirajan, two-time Member of Legislative Assembly from the T. Nagar constituency and veteran physician, died at his residence in CIT Nagar here on Tuesday. He is survived by wife, son and three daughters. On Sunday (July 21), he would have turned 84 years.
Hailing from Mannargudi in the present-day Tiruvarur district, Dr. Sourirajan, a graduate in medicine, joined the Congress in 1946. For 14 years starting from 1954, he was a councillor in Chennai Corporation, representing T. Nagar. He became a close associate of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and was his personal physician.
Briefly, Dr. Sourirajan was out of the Congress and he associated himself with the Gandhi Kamaraj National Congress, led by Kumari Ananthan.
It was then that he was first elected to the Assembly in 1980. Later, the GKNC merged with the Congress. Four years later, he was again re-elected from T. Nagar.
His wife, Rukmini, is also a doctor.
